When the soft plaque formed on teeth that is not properly removed by brushing and flossing, it hardens and forms calculus which can only be removed by professional dental cleaning, if it is not completely removed it can lead to gum disease.

Gum disease can range from simple, mild form of gum inflammation (Gingivitis) to serious disease resulting in major damage of soft tissue and bone that support the teeth (Periodontitis). In the worst cases, teeth are lost.

Symptoms of gum disease include: Bad breath, bleeding and swollen gums, painful chewing, and sensitive or loose teeth.
Treatment ranges from simple scaling and polishing, root planning to advance surgical intervention.
